2019 Autumn Equinox Cruise @ Semiahmoo Resort
Sep 20 – Sep 22 all-day

Picnic Area

The Bellingham Yacht Club 16th Annual Autumn Equinox Cruise is September 20-22, 2019.

Join us for our 16th Autumn Equinox cruise this September 20-22 in Blaine at the Semiahmoo Marina to end our Bellingham Yacht Club cruising season.  This affords everyone in the Club, as well as friends of the Club, the opportunity to easily participate in a cruise that can be reached in 30 minutes by car or a 1 ½ hours by boat. The schedule is:

Friday morning/afternoon, September 20th Depart Bellingham.  Once you come abreast of Birch Point, drop your crab pots off most anywhere in 40-60 feet of water.  If crabbing continues to be as good as it is, you can expect a full pot by Saturday morning, or even later Friday night.  (One of my favorite spots that always does well is 48o 56.862’ N 122 o 51.932’ W.  I drop my pots right at 60’.) When you get to the marina, you can hail them on channel 68 if it is before 5:00.

Guest moorage registration instructions can be found at the Semiahmoo Marina website:

Friday night, September 20th – We will have a potluck reception at the top of the dock at 1800.  At 1900 we have three extremely talented musicians and their band, “Shearwater”.  They will be performing music we all know from the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s.  “Shearwater” are featured performers at Semiahmoo Resort.

Saturday morning, September 21st:

  1. Potluck breakfast (bring your favorite breakfast item) at the top of the dock at 0900 (although the marina store has some pretty good breakfast sandwiches and expresso starting at 0700).

Saturday afternoon, September 21st:

  1. We will be leading a walk for a little over a mile down the Semiahmoo peninsula to the Alaska Packers Association Cannery Museum. The cannery served as a center for salmon processing for nearly 80 years and is housed in an original cannery building. This is well worth the walk, and definitely covers this history of one of the most important canneries in Northwest Washington.
  2. After returning from the cannery, it will be a great time to pull those crab pots that you put out on Friday (if you have not yet done it). The check-in for the crab contest will be at 1700, and don’t forget the largest crab (and smallest) both win a prize.
  3. At 1800 we will have our potluck dinner (again at the top of the dock), and the crab cookers should be full!  Following will be our annual fire with stories of cruising during 2019. As always, food will be plentiful, stories told, and memories of cruises past shared.

Sunday, September 22nd:

  1. The Marina Store will be open for a breakfast sandwich and an expresso, and we will plan on meeting in the Store at 0800 for a bite to eat before we all end our formal Bellingham Yacht Club cruising season.

A Few Notes:

Semiahmoo Resort has rooms that people without boats can book, which includes access to the Spa, Health club and Packers Lounge, known for its specialty food and drink.

To reserve your slip call (360) 371-0440. You can also email them at moorageoffice@semiahmoomarina.  Ask for Doug or Sally and let them know you are coming for the Bellingham Yacht Club cruise.

If you want a room at the resort, call (360) 318-2000.  The room rates are generally quite reasonable, and it is just 600 feet to the Marina.  There is no special rate for the Bellingham Yacht Club cruise, but it might help if you tell them you are booking to be part of the cruise.

Finally, Semiahmoo is just a short drive from Bellingham, so those who may not be able to join us for the entire weekend, you are welcome for any part of it!

Questions?  Call John Gargett or Patti White (360) 656-5700

2020 4th of July Cruise to Garrison Bay @ Garrison Bay
Jul 3 – Jul 5 all-day

Join Pete and Jamie Foti for the annual 4th of July joint cruise with the Wheel and Keel.

We’re still doing the Garrison Bay 4th of July cruise but there’ll be some changes due to COVID 19 since we can’t gather in groups of any size.

1) Rafts will be limited to 3 boats or 5 people

2) There will be NO potluck-or-Drink Mixology Contest

3) There will be an “Appetizer Parade” on Sat July 4 at 4 pm.  The appetizer will need to be a type that is “pre-assembled” and put on a plate with tings or spoon, and does not require “lingering”, such as dips, or cheese, meat & crackers. The  dinghies can keep circulating until everyone is satisfied, or the food is gone.  Those who wish to participate may gather by dinghy at the host boat, “Dragons Den”, and “exchange” appetizers.  This will help with 6’ social distancing compliance, and still allow some socializing, albeit at a distance.

Garrison Bay is a great place to spend the 4th – it’s peaceful yet close enough to Roche Harbor to see the fireworks.  You can raft up with the group or anchor nearby if you prefer.  There’s lots to do during the day including exploring English Camp and hiking to the summit of Young’s Hill or going over to Roche Harbor.  Look for the Foti’s boat – Dragon’s Den, a 46′ Ponderosa Europa Trawler.  Bring extra fenders and dock lines for rafting.
